Tuesday Things

Today’s question: Cataloging sources. What cataloging sources do you use most? Any particular reason? Any idiosyncratic choices, or foreign sources, or sources you like better than others? Are you able to find most things through LT’s almost 700 sources?

I had to think about this one for a minute. I almost always go with the default, which is Amazon. Not usually disappointed. But of course, there is a reason for this. I have been too busy (lazy?) to enter all of the books that I have here at the house. I have quite a few esoteric works about Eastern Europe and I wonder if I will have to go to LOC (or original cataloging) to input those books, should I ever get up the energy. One question I have is whether any of you have the barcode scanner they are always talking about?? That might make life a little easier, not sure! If anyone uses one, please tell me how it works for you.

Have a good reading week!

I have the CueCat scanner, and it works fine, but as far as I can tell it only works when you have a barcode with an ISBN-13 (one that starts with 978). Otherwise I still have to enter older books manually. My husband got it when he opened his account because he didn't want to hand-enter all of them.

Like Marie, I got my CueCat mainly because the hubby didn't want to enter all his books manually. As it turned out, most of his books don't have barcodes and had to be entered by hand anyway. But the scanner can save a huge amount of time if you've got mostly very recent books to list. And if you're not picky about the way the info is entered.

I had already entered the majority of the books before I realized the CueCat didn't come free with my lifetime account. for some reason, I thought LT gave them with a lifetime account I'm not getting boxes of books a week, so I don't see the need to buy one now.
